Ironkey Is Funded by The Department of Homeland Security

Ironkey received a $1.4 million grant in 2005 to develop their product through the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security that is tasked with advancing technology designed to protect the U.S.
The Ironkey project was part of the Cyber Security program area of CID.

The NSA are Forcing U.S. Vendors to Implement Backdoors

The NSA spends $250m a year on a program which, among other goals, works with technology companies to “covertly influence” their product designs. This was revealed by Edward Snowden to the Guardian. The NSA are in other words forcing US vendors to build backdoors into their products. These vendors are prohibited under law to disclose this. This was highlighted already in early 2013 when Casper Bowden, former Chief Privacy Adviser at Microsoft, exposed the details of this practice that it (FISAA) provided blanket authorization and that there was no individual warrant needed. Microsoft (in this case) was prevented by law, as a US company, to say anything to the affected users.

Why are NSA backdoors an issue for law-abiding citizens?

By building backdoors into their products vendors are creating an unsecure architecture that cannot only be used by the government but also by criminals and hackers that disclose these backdoors. For more on the topic see Bruce Schneiers excellent blog.
